Welcome to the Kernohan Family Genealogy page! This is a resource page for anyone who is researching the Kernohan surname. Below you will find many things to help you with your research.

I am now teaching and don't have a lot of time for my genealogy except during my summer breaks. Please understand that I can't often answer email right away nor can I post information immediately. I also cannot do research for you. I don't have time for my own. Also, on my worldconnect Kernohan page, I have posted everything that I have.

I welcome any additions and corrections to these pages. Please contact:

ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME KERNOHAN

According to Bell's "Book of Ulster Surnames", KERNOHAN is a variant of the Irish name KERNAGHAN which also has the variants of KERNAHAN, CARNAHAN, CARNAGHAN, and MCKERNAN. The name was first found in the county of Donegal according to several sources. Apparently, KERNOHAN is now found mainly in County Antrim while KERNAGHAN is found mainly in County Armagh.

In my ancestor's case, he was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1815 and moved to County Antrim when four years old. Perhaps his ancestors had one of these names: CARNACHAN, CARNOCHAN, or CARNAHAN or perhaps even the MCKERNAN surname.

The name KERNAGHAN and variants comes from the Gaelic O Cearnachain, from "cearmach" meaning "victorious".

DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT KERNOHAN AND MARTHA BARR (DUNBAR)

Robert Kernohan was born in Dundee, Scotland. He moved to County Antrim, N. Ireland at the age of four and married Martha Barr (Dunbar)in County Cork, Ireland in 1844. Robert and Martha's first two children were born in N. Ireland. The family immigrated to London, Ontario in 1847. While at sea, their daughter Mary Jane, barely 9 months old, died and was buried at sea. Robert and Martha had three children in Canada and then immigrated to Ingham County, Michigan in 1855. The port of entry was Detroit, Michigan. A tragic carriage accident would claim Martha's life in 1874. Robert died at the age of 75 at the home of his daughter from tuberculosis.

Martha Barr (Dunbar)
was the daughter of James Barr II and Jean MacPherson of County Antrim, N. Ireland. The family story (from Len Strange) says that three brothers of the Dunbar clan from the vicinity of Glasgow, Scotland, crossed to Ireland about 1640 due to persecution because of their Presbyterianism. They changed their name to Barr and settled in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The MacPhersons, also from the Glasgow region are believed to have moved for the same reasons. Six Barr siblings, Martha, Daniel, Ann, Thomas, Archibald, and William settled in Michigan and had farms near Meridan Road within about six miles of each other. (Some information take by Len Strange from Barr History, compiled by Inda Barr, granddaughter of Daniel Barr, 1918)
